Adam Lambert who was the runner-up during the 2009 season of the television show called "America Idol" has brought back a little of the glamour to rock and rock. In the 1980's there was a whole series of "glam" rock stars in both the United States and Britain, the most famous being David Bowie.
It has always been a tradition in showmanship rock concerts from glam rock to heavy metal for male performers to wear mascara. Adam Lambert happens to be gay, but most of the other rock stars who wear mascara are not and they include some pretty wild and crazy guys like Ozzie Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and the members of the band Kiss who took glam makeup to the extreme.
Even Bret Michaels wears mascara. Bret is the lead singer from the band "Poison" who dated Pamela Anderson when she was Baywatch hot. He had a reality show called "Rock of Love" where he essentially bedded all the females who wanted to be his girlfriend in order to choose one he wanted to keep.
He has gone on to have a successful solo career, including releasing a country album that did well. He drives motorcycles, almost killed himself in a high speed crash of his Ferrari, and is a hard-core straight macho party guy who wears mascara. So wearing mascara is about the look and not sexual orientation. Some guys just look better will a little mascara on.
There was a time when guys were considered freaks if they dyed their hair, but that was long ago and far away. In the 1960's and 1970's pierced earrings (especially one left pierced ear) meant you had to be gay. It was a way of men determining interest without embarrassment. Now pierced earrings are just a choice of personal adornment enjoyed equally by both sexes. It is not even really radical for a guy to wear an earring.
You see guys wearing them everywhere even in church and at the bank. Mascara has yet to make such a shift, except amongst the goth rockers and there it has firmly taken hold amongst boys and girls. But this is the same group that thinks Marilyn Manson looks good when he resembles some dug up corpse with a glass eyeball. If you venture into the goth scene, you soon realize that in order to try to rebel and be different, everyone into goth rock ended up looking the same.
If you really want to be different wear country western cloths to a Marilyn Manson concert, get as close to stage as possible and yell "Yee Haw!" all night. You will probably be alright if you are wearing mascara. If anyone bothers you, just tell them you are a zombie cowboy back from the O.K. Corral.
Certainly if you are planning to go out on the town to a dance club, rock concert, or a rave, wearing mascara will be fine. No one will even pay much notice, it is part of that scene. Yet you probably still would not look right wearing mascara in the daytime and going the gym. One day that may change and mascara for men will be just as boring as everything else.
